Chow Gar Kung Fu
Kung Fu Schools and the Chow Gar Style
The Chow Gar kung fu style is unique amongst Southern Praying Mantis kung fu styles. Before we get into what makes this stand out from other kung fu schools, let’s take a look at the basics of the Praying Mantis style.
The basics of this style of kung fu are centerline theory and the generation of internal shock power. Centerline theory states that a combatant has a “centerline” that can be controlled and manipulated. Like a center of gravity, if you control this aspect, you can control the fight. Internal shock power is delivered through a rapid succession of close-range techniques.
Our Chow Gar kung fu stands out from other kung fu schools. Our technique allows you to attack and defend simultaneously. We achieve this through continuous, fluid movement and a fast series of connecting strikes.
Our style also emphasizes Chi Sao, or “Sticky Hands.” This is a close range technique that builds up sensitivity that allows you to “stick with” a combatant. This allows you to both follow and control the movement of the encounter.
Of course, no Praying Mantis style would be complete without the iconic conditioning of the arms. Our school focuses on building up the explosive striking power that the praying mantis is known for. This is done through both building up relaxed power at a distance as well as conditioning strength, stamina, and flexibility.
The Chow Gar school also has a focus on building internal energy and staying healthy. Like many styles of martial arts, the key to becoming a Praying Mantis master is to promote your own health and lead a healthy lifestyle.
