The History of Chinese Kung Fu
Our kung fu classes trace their history back to over three hundred years ago in China. We draw our style of kung fu from the Southern Praying Mantis tradition. If you are looking to study one of the most iconic styles of kung fu, reach out to our school today.
The origins of Chinese kung fu can be found in early hand to hand combat techniques. Our style of kung fu differs from the movements of Shaolin kung fu and does not make use of weapons. The Chow Gar style of kung fu actually has more in common with Hakka styles including Dragon, White Crane, and Wing Chun. The style got its start like many of the branches of kung fu, by observing nature.
Chow Ah-Nam, a Hakka boy who left his home to find medical treatment, joined the Southern Shaolin Monastery in Fujian Province where he also studied martial arts. It was during his studies that he noticed the unique movements of the praying mantis and adopted them into the fighting style that we all recognize today.
Our kung fu classes draw on this history and keep this unique style of kung fu alive in our modern time. Studying Chinese kung fu helps build physical strength as well as confidence and self defence skills.
